This is a very difficult question to answer. What is your definition of a "knowledge management professional?" Is this someone whose primary job responsibilities specifically list "knowledge management?" If so, then I agree with the respondent who suggested that there aren't many.
However, if these are people whose jobs exist because they have special skills (knowledge), then the number is in the hundreds of thousands, if not millions. For example, Buckman Labs treats nearly all their employees as knowledge workers, asking that they all participate in client relationships.
