I don't think at all that the essence of KM resides today in this "generous sharing of knowledge" you are talking about : indeed, it wouldn't be a plausible argument.

Nothing generous, but on the contrary a necessity (something very selfish), because our own capacity of accumulating information is limited, and we have to accumulate NEW knowledge all the time, and very quickly ... to be competitive.

So, sharing knowledge is just a win-win attitude : you tell me what you know, and I give you what I do (that's the way things go : giving information returns information). It is also a way for experts to spend less time in acquiring "fastidious" knowledge others already know in order to spend more in innovation.
