A cynical thread.... My question has to do with why an organization with a turnover of $8MM and so many employees would drop this kind of project on an inexperienced person? Is the project something requested by "management," but still doomed for failure?

I've just finished the entertaining, Serious Play by Michael Schrage. It suggests that any model (i.e. a knowledge map) that does not ruffle a few feathers is not modeling the right things. Models that prove exactly what they are expected to prove are useless, and models that are contrary to everything an organization believes won't be given the time of day. I highly recommend this book.

I certainly agree with your (Martyn) idea that KM needs to engender honesty and openness amongst the people who are supposed to be "doing" KM, both within an organization and amongst like-minded friends.
