Don,

I haven't yet had chance to read your book, but I've just read through the discussion threads about it, and would like to offer the thought that KM is not just about making tacit things explicit.

It may be that we're just using the terms in different ways, but my view is that a great deal of knowledge (though not all) cannot be made explicit, or at least the process of doing so would be more trouble than it's worth.

Instead, a more holistic approach to KM would involve recognising where tacit knowledge exists (e.g. in people's heads) and making sure things are decided/done by the people who have the required knowledge.

Where knowledge needs to be transferred, this may be through discussions (or other interpersonal interactions), rather than documentation, and may not involve knowledge becoming explicit at any stage. I believe that, as children and as adults, we learn many things without ever 'knowing what we know' or even 'knowing that we are learning'.

Hope this helps,
Mike.
