Hi,
The argument you have posted is a common one that we face when setting up KM systems in firms.
the essence of the assumption is that 'knowledge is power' i.e. the employee feels that the more knowledge he hoards, the more valuable he is to the firm.however, remember that it is impossible for anyone to share ALL the knowledge he has as knowledge is never static.
eg. a salesman with 20 years experience will keep accumulating knowledge from the level of his experience, which will be different from the level of knowledge accumulated by a rookie salesman. therefore, if our experienced saleman becomes a mentor to the rookie, the company should be able to recognise the experienced guy as an inexhaustable knowledge resource to the firm. thus the experienced salesman's value to the firm is MUCH MORE than if he hoarded his knowledge.
if the employee is compensated for being a knowledge resource in the firm he has a reason to share.
