It seems that a number of issues are at work here. History has shown that Xerox (in particular, their Palo Alto Research Lab - PARC) has maintained a strong lead in developing innovations, but they need to get their act together in commercialization and marketing of those innovations. However, it may not be appropriate to single out Xerox - all major Tech stocks have gone through gyrations with many of them having lost 90% or more value in the past few weeks. But, is it the tech sector only that is volatile? No, if you look at the last week's historical record drop in Dow Jones index reflecting that the 'blue chips' of the 'tired and tested economy' are sharing the fate of the new economy 'dot-coms' and companies supporting their infrastructures. Xerox lost a major opportunity in capitalizing upon the inkjet printer market in which HP was able to gain a major lead. But is it smooth sailing at HP? No! They are undergoing one of the most significant restructuring moves in their history, which may have dire consequences if they are not able to pull through consolidation of their 84 or so product divisions - I believe Business Week did a cover on this issue, too. Ironically, both HP and Xerox were profiled in the KM World 100 companies cover issue.

It is not he KM systems per se, but the current organizational-technological systems that are caught in a frenzy that is historically unprecedented. Most such systems are trying to cope with unforeseen shifts in their business environments - and each of the involved organizations is trying to determine how they can successfully innovate (and re-invent) their business models.
