One way to recognize and characterize KE is to identify when it is absent:
a) You find islands of expertise and no idea sharing and little collaboration
b) Mistakes reoccur with little learning
c) Re-invention and duplication will be the order of the day
d) Competency will be clustered in a few indispensible experts
e) Firm will be an "also ran" lagging market leaders, slow and low on ivvovationf) Silos will have strong impermeable walls, depatmental repositories and few IT standards
g) Reward system will be based on individual production rather than team contributions
h) Opportunities are missed, change cycle and personal adaption will be slow, flexibility will be low
i) The firm will collect, audit & measure knowledge (IC) as individual objects, ignoring the people, dynamics, patterns and the relationships
j) Strained customer relations, many surprisesk) Firm competes on price and is slow to market
