Hi Mike,
Here's a few thoughts on the matter. Is nature conscious? Does nature, via its eco-systems, exhibit intelligence? Of course. Thus, knowledge 'ecology' has inherent management qualities, for example, nature 'manages' to maintain a sustainable, viable quality of life for all of us.
Mapping a knowledge ecology is a good idea. A knowledge map is something I've always been interested in, ecology or otherwise. The map I worked on had social/biological components subsisting between the inorganic/intellectual components. Ecology is a stepping stone towards higher, social constructs. Perhaps it is the human equivelant to trying to mimic the efficiency of natural ecologies.
I like your description of data/info/knowledge. The way I see it, we make informed decisions based on our data, and knowledgeable decisions based on our information.
