One way to look at knowledge ecology (KE) is to contrast this concept with knowledge management (KM). For me knowledge ecology has closer ties to the biological paradigm now sweeping business and economics (symbosis, co-optition, codevelopment, mutual dependence, exchange not purchase). The emphasis is less on 'leverage' competitive advantage, mining and more on relationships, community, learning, dialog, adjustment and adaption.

KM as I see it practiced, is concerned with mostly with efficiency, access, storage and distribution of existing, explicit information or intellectual property objects (mainly documents, patents, copywrite). The focus in KM is 'know what we know', capturing lessons learned and best practices, all these activities have passed, people enter the equation as byproduct or a barrier to change. KE is more concerned with knowledge creation, innovation and connecting to an ever changing market, there is a adaptive, people centered and future bias here.

It is clear we need to pay attention to both these view points there must be balance.

What is KE has been the subject of ongoing debate at another site. George Por, one of the early pioneers of KE has helped us shape the concept. You are invited to join the dialog.

A unique knowledge ecology fair takes place during February 1998, with Yogesh as a keynote speaker! I'm sure the definition and utility of this distinction will come under a bright spotlight.
