The ideas you presented in this letter just turned on a light as to what KM is when compared to IM, which is what my degree is in.

I would disagree with the 4 levels, believing that knowledge and understanding are essentially the same thing. I fully support your idea of data and information, but how can you claim knowledge without understanding? The basis for being able to claim knowledge should be the willingness to make a decision.

It is this critical information that is required to make a decision to achieve desired results that is the basis for KM, as opposed to IM, which is essentially managing the cyclic flow of data and information. Essentially, KM suports decision making, which is a function of management, while IM supports processes, or staff functions.

I know you have your own opinions on this, but I thought I'd share mine with you and everyone else.
