Robert & Vaughn -- As you probably know, I am not very sanguine about definitively distinguishing between data, information and knowledge. I think that all these concepts are weaved together in a rather seamless fabric, that is not transparent, but rather shimmery, if you will. Wisdom, from the prespective of definition is much worse. I think it safe to say that wisdom has delighted and totally baffled people for as long as there have been people (cf Plato's Philosopher Kings, and ensuing discussions). While usually associated with age, it can be found in the young -- my current favorite example is Maxime Vengeroff, a Russian violinist in his mid twenties. I've seen one of his master classes on the tube, and his commanding presence, knowledge and wisdom are beyond belief. In many respects, Vengoroff is the equal of the legendary Isaac Stern, wonderfully wise in his late seventies. I some cases, wisdom is a gift from God; built into the person from birth. So, this to me, suggests that wisdom is a product of genetics and experience, in a wide variety of proportions.

I think that the most characteristic feature of wisdom is no tolerance for BS, no great love of the fashionable, honesty. Independence for sure, but also ties to people and to reality. But then, what happens? Willy Nelson, Sen. Patrick Monyihan, J. Robert Oppenheimer, Placido Domingo, Doris Kearns Goodwin, BB King -- some of my list of wise ones. Ultimately, I just recognize their wisdom at some elemental level. Define? It's beyond me. Just enjoy and learn.

Regards,
Reilly
