Martyn

I think that knowledge is the ability to act and/or decide (in a well informed way).

A conflict arises when certain actions and/or decisions are not aligned with the interests of all those who have an interest in this action and/or decision (i.e. stake-holders).

The objective of Knowledge Management is (or should be) to improve the quality of decisions made and actions performed.

The objective of Conflict Management is to (re)align the actions and decisions with the interests of the stakeholders.

Conflict Management encompasses (at least) three areas:
- conflict prevention (to avoid a conflict, or the escalation of a conflict)
- conflict resolution (to stop the conflict)
- damage control (to handle the consequences of the conflict)

The following capabilities can improve the quality of conflict management, the capability of:
- gathering information on the interests of the stakeholders;
- game theory;
- diplomacy;
- using means of power (e.g. military forces in a conflict between countries, authority in a conflict in an organisation)
- .....

Managing the knowledge of the conflict management capabilities, such as mentioned above, that is what KM can add and enhance to CM.

Best Regards
Daan de Koning
