Robert-- I generally agree with you, but I must take issue of your stand on assimilation. The best a teacher can ever do is to tell the students what there is to learn, and to provide as much help as possible in helping the student develop tools and skills to do the learning. Indeed learning has social aspects, but it also must be solitary at times -- like facing the terror of the blank page, "How am I ever going to deal with this?" The student's major responsiblity is to assimilate and master the course material, and, in addition, to make sense of it. Based on my experience as a professor and mentor I can assure you that this approach works very well -- provided the student is minimally self indulgent. My standard introductory lecture, no matter what I was teaching included, "All I can do is show you what there is to learn, and help you to learn it. But, ultimately, it's your job to learn it" I was not the only one to express this.

Learning is often very hard; it can be terrifying, it can bring your insecurities to the foreground. And it can be gloriously stimulating, exciting and confidence building. It's the student's responsibility to deal with all these issues, not the teacher's.

So there.
Regards,
Reilly
