Intranets can help knowledge management if they are planned to be that way. In the first wave, Intranets were built to be just there. However, it is now time to organize and channel information without meddling too much with. Company's functional organizations can be thought of channels and each channel could have a guide to help provide useful links, information and resources for that particular channel.
Identifying and helping informal communities of practice could be another way to reap more benefits from the Intranets and boost organizational knowledge.
