This discussion reminds me of the Ken Blanchard-inspired ideas around providing motivation within an organization. Not only does management need to provide pats on the back and other positive feedback, but there must also be a connection between the grand vision of the company (yes, the "Mission") and the day-to-day activities of each employee.
I suspect this is difficult for many people, but if it is impossible then what is the purpose of the division that doesn't understand its connection to the company's purpose? Or, why does the purpose not include this department?
Back to KM: Since KM is really just one aspect of a corporate strategy, success suggests that there is a strong understanding of the vision by all the people involved in the implementation. The two (vision and implementation) must meet for success to happen.
