Martyn makes some very practical observations about the source of these failures. Of course, these are endemic to any corporate venture.

The connection to the corporate vision is interesting, since other conversations have suggested that the "visions" are rarely in line with what people do from day-to-day. Clearly, if the vision does not have anything to do with what I am doing, the vision means very little. Similarly, if a new strategy has little connection to my activities, then why should I even think about it -- even it this new strategy might be helpful in the long run.

I wonder if the idea of case studies and case histories would be helpful to get a KM strategy out into the company? Implement a strategy in one area, and then publicize the successes and failures to the rest of the company. In an R&D environment, this is essentially how we get our ideas spread to the rest of the company.
