Nice reply, sorry it took me so long to get back and, this probably isn't going to help too much either!

I was babysitting last week, my friends children. As usual one of them started to argue about letting the other play with his toy. One of them keeps his toys pristeen and the other happily drags them along and gets them broken and scratched in play. They could both do with learning from each other, the one taking more care the other relaxing a little. But the actual essence was trying to get them to share in the first place.

A common goal is useful to have when encouraging departments within a company to share knowledge. Plenty of carrots. If departments want to protect their knowledge they need to agree to protect the knowledge they share, so building trust.

As for sharing externally ... I'm still thinking on that one.
