Robert,
Thanks for your detailed and interesting reply. Like you, we have attempted to design a system that closes feedback loops and becomes self-reinforcing for the users. What we are attempting to do with an integrated knowledge directory is develop a matrix of reinforcement where organisational climate and culture come together to establish the normative behaviour of knowledge sharing. Through integration with HR processes (such as PERs, training, succession planning, rewards and recognition), we aim to embed the behaviour of creating, contributing and using knowledge as part of the way work is done.
The knowledge directory is not just a 'map' of knowledge in the company (we have multiple BU spread globally) but also linked to best practice identification and development, as well as project learnings. Our HR integration enables each user and their manager to monitor contributions, value of learnings, feedback and skill development. Yes, we realise the risks of linking Performance Evaluations with knowledge management and have designed a process methodology to help integrate the web application with the BU’s business processes and current culture.
Regards, Allan
