Plesak --The something for many of us is reality, which seems to have the property of indifference toward whether to lay problems or opportunities upon us. A market crash at the time of your IPO, or an unexpected truce with someone who can help you cement a deal. I suspect as much as education and experience play roles in "what spirit' by which to proceed, temprament is a huge factor. And, often, there's not much you can do about that -- in fact there is increasing evidence that for example, the traits of congeniality vs. shyness are substantially genetic in nature. The intractability of human nature presents major problems and major opportunities -- but sometimes it's hard to tell the difference.
Over the course of my reasonably long career, I've always strived to do the best I could with what I had, and always to confront problems head on. Should you want to correct the focus you don't like, then leadership by example is your best bet. People and organizations that tend to have a more optimistic outlook at least seem to do better, and sometimes acually do.
I agree with Martyn that yours is a good, subtle, and profound question
