Here's another one. This one is a lot of fun, particularly with a younger group. Peanut Butter and Jelly Exercise.
You bring large containers of peanut butter and jelly and loaves of bread, and knives, and napkins.Again, break up the group however you wish. It is really effective in diads, because everyone participates at the same time.
So one person is the "robot" and the other is the human, giving the "robot" instructions on how to construct a peanut butter and jelly sandwich.
The human writes all the instructions down, numbering each step. When the person instructing the robot is done, they pass the message to the robot, who proceeds to go step by step through the instructions, taking them as literally as possible, without adding the unwritten, implied or obvious deletions or omissions. Chaos will promptly ensue.
Know that in simply writing this out, I am aware of the possibility for misinterpretation and a failed exercise. It might be best to simply think about the possibilities here and construct the exercise based on the concept here that we as humans do a lot to move things along when we adequate tacit knowledge, when we have a grasp of the essence of the knowledge, however we are like the robot with insufficient tools or articulation.
