Hi Lisa!

If I have read your question right, I have a simple example I have used in getting the point of KM across.

In a meeting, pick a high ranking individual (or anyone) and ask them to verbally describe how to make a paper airplane to another selected individual. When they are done, point out that what was said could have easily been written done and sent to anyone. Now ask the receiving indivdual if they think they could build a paper airplane from what was said. Now point out that that is an example of tacit to explicit knowledge transfer.

Now point out that if the receiving individual had come over and watched the subject individual actually make a paper airplane as they described it verbally, the receiving individual would have been part of a more tacit-to-tacit transfer.

This usually gets the ball rolling on the kinds of knowledge we deal with, and which is appropriate for what circumstance.

It's simple, but usually effective. Hope that helps.

Dan
