Martyn -- To a large degree I agree with you. I think the case that eCommerce and KM are very different can be made very simply.

When you strip away all the romantic hype and jargon, you will see that eCommerce is not much different than selling apples off a truck, or selling vacuum cleaners door-to-door. Business is business-- sell and deliver.(And lots of eCommerce outfits are having a very hard time; you might say that some of them managed the wrong information)

From what I can determine, KM is some combination of staff and managment activities that make the selling and delivering more efficient, more simple, and more profitable.

eCommerce is standard business utilizing new technology and channels. KM provides a new approach and emphasis to management and staff work. The differences are, I think, quite self evident.
