Greetings Hilda,
A distinction I find useful is between audits and mapping. knowledge audits vs. knowledge mapping.
Audits tend to be associated with answering questions of compliance and changes in asset value, they attempt to quantify assets, evaluate market opportunities, comment on changes in 'book value' and report on deviations from accepted and agreed policy. Martyn provides the differences in terms of 'targets' very well. I would add that knowledge audits tend to focus on intellectual capital and to 'near market' explicit assets that have some legal recognition & protection, e.g. brand value, trademarks, patents, copyright. Here is a link collection on knowledge mapping and knowledge audits that sets out my views.
