This is one of the best questions and I've been trying to tackle it my head for a few months. I too, cannot seem to find articles which help.

I think you need to be more specific on the knowedge you want to share and or protect.

There is a difference in sharing knowledge with a partner to allow them to help you (and protecting the knowledge), as opposed to sharing knowledge with a community for the purpose of research or development of an idea.

Ofcourse, remove the profit relation and you have a far smaller problem!
