I've been thinking about this lately -- trying to imagine appropriate carrots and sticks. And while I think incentives are important, I've come to the conclusion that there are many things that impede knowledge sharing -- especially if you think of it as knowledge, not just information, sharing.
For example, if you share knowledge with someone in a business contect, will you be rebuffed by the recipient as someone who sticks her nose into other departments' businesss. Or, a know-it-all. This happens more often than one thinks. Or you don't share something with a colleague because you're not sure it's pertinent, and don't want to waste their time. Or worse yet, have them tell you what you're offering up -- knowledge -- is just plain wrong or unimportant. Or maybe you're telling them something they already know.
The point is if you think of knowledge sharing, from a risk perspective. If you ask yourself what risks are involved, you can work toward eliminating those risks. It's not a solution, of course, but a different way of framing the problem might help you work toward a solution.
