This topic comes up in the literature a lot. I just read something recently that scientists don't necessarily go for money first. (I frequently say that if I wanted money, I would have gone to work directly after my bachelor's degree in engineering instead of going for a PhD.)
What incentives to provide really depends on the audience. Buckman Labs rewarded their top knowledge sharers with a long weekend and a few nice tchotchkes. I bet some companies could go a long way toward incenting their people to share if they see top management participating in the sharing. (Why would I want to put myself on the line, if my boss doesn't?)
It is an interesting problem. Let us know what you decide.
