Certainly, the concept we have behind sharing is better - or more inclusive - than transfer. Our company has taken to the phrase Technology Relocation in place of Technology Transfer in order to differentiate between throwing it over the wall (transfer) and moving to a new location. What this means in practice is that there are longer periods of interactions between Discovery, Development and Manufacturing.
However, since a lot of Knowledge Management is wrapped up in the technology that enables long-distance relationships, how do we deal with the difference between Sharing and Transfer? What work processes do we develop to give more value to the information than the written word, or the bits in a database? Isn't this really what we want to do in KM?
For example, we are evaluating some software that will clearly help retain information for many purposes, including technology relocation. However, the tool itself won't be of much use if the people who use it do not communicate and share additional knowledge about the information stored in the database.
