Once again, I am going to suggest Buckman Labs as a good example of this. Their literature (http://www.knowledge-nurture.com/ gives a good overview. Xerox has created what is essentially an expert system for their copier-repair people.
More specific to your question is engineering design software. I'm familiar with Chemical Engineering; there are packages that coordinate engineering activities from the design stage through the building stage. I know about AxSys from AEA Technology and Zyqad from Aspen Technology. I know that Fluor Daniel uses a modified version of Zyqad for their chemical facility construction business.
