Hi Susan,

The real issue here is the quality of that reflection. My choice would be interviews as there is more opportunity to observe body language, detect evasiveness and how comfortable the speaker is with their answers. Relection is a highly personal activity, I would think you could find most folks saying they practice reflection but they do not do this at regular intervals, follow any ritual, select sufficiently quiet times and places, practice 'emptying' the mind or other activities that help to raise the level of reflection.

I'm very interested in group reflection practices as this is one of the core knowledge creation skills. I think reflection is difficult and a liitle 'foreign' to most western culture. This is a difficult quest you have set. As a dominantly cognitive activity, reflection is difficult to detect with traditional ethnographic methods. I have tried 'talk back' protocols, repeat interviews (to check against previous answers), cross calibration with colleagues, to verify behavoral patterns and silent observation in this area. Perhaps an informal dialog is the way to go here. You will need to establish some common ground around what refelection is, how to judge its quality, the cognitive states and persoanl feelings that go along with this practice. Not an easy task.

Good luck
