Hi Vaughn,

I'm interested in the assumptions that underlie your approack to KM. Here is what I understand:

1) An individual given a clear vision and mission statement is able to determine their information needs, perhaps with the help of the IMO or CKO
2) There is a clear link between provision of information and quality decision results
3) Knowledge formation and use is (mainly) driven by information.

If these rather broad assumptions are somewhat correct, I have some questions:

a) How do individuals and groups grapple with what they don't know, they need to know?
b) How are emergent, higly dynamic information needs handled in your system (this is the norm rather than the exception in my experience).
c) How does your system cater for implict knowledge, gather heuristics and encourage dialog, promote sharing & learning, which you will see I have come to regard as the route to knowledge.

I'm having a hard time seeing how the 'push' in your system can supply all the knowledge needs. You may have gathered from readings here at Brint, I tend to favor dialog, regard information needs as emergent rather than directed or given, see knowledge as arrising from the negotiation around opinions, shared perceptions and intuitions, resorting in relationships, embedded in processes and transfered through conversation, interaction, apprenticeship and coaching, rather than via explicit information.

Would be very interested to hear & see how you blend information needs with innovative tools to get to knowledge. Care to share?
