Great question and like all good questions the answer depends on your starting premises and mental model.
If you hold the opinion, think, surmize, perhaps even believe:
1) Innovation is fast becoming a competitive driver
2) Continuous learning is essential for business response & survival
3) Collaboration can release & increase value locked in individual insights
4) Group intelligence gathering and profile compilation delivers lower risk and higher quality information than haphazard individual efforts
5) Knowledge sharing increases the chances and the quality of decisions
6) Deep dialog and open communications allows for greater synergy and more useful or pragmatic ideas
7) Knowledge discovery via pattern recogition helps to isolate useful business rules
8) Aggregation and sifting of customer insights yields value & builds relationships
9) Presenting the customer with a unified interface assists with reducing confusion and may help with building loyaly
10) Preventing re-invention and being able to leverage reuse of proven, tested solutions, best practices and avoiding past errors is helpful
11) Building an interactive repository can help with faster learning, speed the induction of new employees and assist colleagues around the world
12) Compiling a directory of who knows who and who knows what, will faciliate and speed decision making and problem solving
13) Hiring staff that are willing to share, have strong identities and question existing norms helps the business stay a floatIf you agree, think, appreciate or believe: agility, awareness, intelligence, easier access to quality heuristics, a focus on supporting & making implicit knowledge explicit and having a focus on intangible assets, makes for improved competitive advantage, lowers risk, helps to steer the ship in stormy waters and is the way of the future, perhaps you may wish to look at some of the things KM offers.
