Greetings Jane,

From a lot of perspectives, knowledge sharing is the central KM practice. I think the subject is more complex than molding, modeling or prototyping sharing behaviors. Seems rewards and recongition play a large part, setting and communicating clear expectations and walking the talk with hiring and firing patterns that back this vision, and leadership by example are key activities here. Sharing at the individual level is closely tied to identity, supporting communities of practice where it is safe to experiment, fail and learn certainly help, having trust, support and encoragement from colleagues and peers contributes. Sharing often evloves from small steps, reciprocity and risking a little at a time, it can seldom be mandated and may take considerable time to develop. In my view sharing goes beyond publishing and giving access to documents, it is closely tied to relationship building and is one of the main activities involved in bonding. So for me it is not so much around defining behaviors as it is around crafting a safe and supporting environment, recognition of personal and group risk, help with identity strengthening and development of a personal ethos. At a deep level knowledge sharing requires dialog, is assisted by storytelling, implies relationship and reciprocity, goes beyond document access, is best acquired through mentoring and exposure to communities where this is already is an established practice. True sharing comes from within and is not linked to expectations of an exchange, this is rare.
