Denham -- If I had the time and energy and resources, I would try to bring a class action suit against some outfit operating in the grey area -- banks, insurance companies, or whoever -- who resell their data "on me". The target would have to be carefully chosen. Apart from invasion of privacy, I think that strong arguments could be made that those whose data is being sold are owed part of the revenue, and/or have the right to say cease and desist.

As far as is possible, we need to narrow the grey areas as much as possible by means of laws and controls -- as is happening now in the area of medical records. Such a strengthening of the right to privacy and the correctness of controlling personal information would help, among other things, to diminsh the possibility of another McCarthy era. My notion is: push as hard as possible to keep yourself as private as possible.
