I think that if IM can be pushed further towards and into the business and more away from IT then it will be ideally placed to assume a responsibility for KM. If not, for whatever reason, then maybe a separate KM discipline should assume responsibility for the IM function over time.
Maybe over time both the IM badged KM teams and the KM badged IM teams can both evolve into something approaching a cohesive knowledge and information management team, and maybe then will then be relaunched as Intelligence Management teams.
But apart from positioning and internal "PR" I see no other reason why IM should not also include KM.
