The question is more around how much knowledge did you capture from the employee BEFORE she exits. Then it becomes more of a succession issue as to how to transfer the knowledge to someone who is taking over the same repsonsibilities. We are currently looking at document management solutions whereby a "by product" is the capability of capturing documents that were created by the terminating employee. If you were able to capture some context information (e.g. author, topic, client, project) - this could become valuable information for the firm and/or a potential successor.

I've also read about "exit videos" were you'd give the employee an opportunity to leave some recommendations behind (which problably reflect the reason for leaving the firm).
