Greetings Helga,
I'm unable to talk to the origins of the term "content management" but can share my understanding of the concept.
Publishing on the web carries an expectation that the materials shown are accurate, updated and useful, that a visitor can find what they wish or undestand what is offered or navigate to where they wish to be. Most times people who own and operate the web site do not write the material or in an extreme case, may not even understand what is being published.
Content management ensures that what is published on a web site is accurate and validated, that content owners are approached for updates on a regular basis, that new additions and any removals are synchronised with displayed materials, that changes are logged, that backups are kept for restoration in the event of corruption, that the latest versions are displayed.
Where required by the system, content management sees that materials are correctly indexed, adequate and appropriate keywords and summaries are given. If the content is published from a database, content management has the additional responsibility to check field types and null entries.
