Gentlemen -- My question still remains;
Why is it IMPORTANT to distinguish between KM and IT or IM or..?
Whence the source of great passion for making KM independent?
To put the issue in succinct business terms: why outsource KM -- from IM? Why not go the verticle integration route - put them all together? It's this "outsourcing" possibility that suggested empire building as a possible motive for the separation.
After all, IT or IM or folks who built user friendly and user used systems necessarily plied many approaches and techniques with their user community that are here passionately ascribed to knowledge management. The descriptions of and restrictions of competance and interests here described apply IMHO to mediocre IM departments, not to good ones.
So, I remain curious. Why is it important to keep KM and IM apart?
Regards,
Reilly
