Hi,

I was puzzled by the polarization myself. However in forum discussions following the article (on the website of the Harvard Business Review) the author explained that it wasn't his intention to have you choose exclusively between the two. He wanted to point out that you should choose to pursue one strategy with the other strategy assisting the choosen approach. So in his view they can exist together, only one is more important/effective than the other.

Currently I am working on a similar approach as I think the distinction is quite useful, although I don't subscribe to the conclusions the authors draw. My biggest problem with their approach is the lack of business strategy. It's more or less KM for KM's sake.

Having said that I still find their black-white distinction quite useful, if only to see it fade into the grey in the middle (appropriate name you have Denham :)).

Regards,

Kees de Vos.
