To the extent that you characterization of Mr. Hansen's anti-straddle is correct, then Mr. Hansen's views border on the silly. That is, unless he can point to a successfully developed book, treatise, data base.. that did not require human discusion prior to completion. In my experience in writing books and developing data bases, a great deal of person-to-person communication is essential. It seems self evident to me that any one who has dealt practically with such matters uses a "straddle" approach - and anyway, we never knew we were using some kind of "mix and match" approach. The point ought to be: what works? Find the tools to do the job. Do not, repeat do not try to fit the job or problem to the tools conveniently or fashionably available.
