Hello

"One day you show me three coins in a fountain. One day you show me causation. One day you show me state change. One day you show me "forward chaining" or you show me drilling. But you FAIL to show where any philosopher anywhere EVER put it all together."

I don't know whether this particular reply/post will be invalidated because it doesn't come from Reilly, after all the challenge seems to be oriented that way.

However, take your mind back to the early to mid 80's, Star Wars initiatives and Funny Money. I was doing a lot of work in AI, DSS and Databases in that time, with quite a large team based in Madrid, Philadelphia, Minnesota, Paoli, Santa Monica and somewhere in VA. We were working on an "augmented" - remember that overused term - blackboard scheme which actually addressed all of the issues and "paradigms" - oh no! another of those eighties words - above plus some - a lot of - additional goodies. As an aside, a number of "philosophers" were working on this project.

As a result of this project a number of succesful tools were born from 4GL tools thru DSS to OLAP and sophisticated Fire Systems etc. etc. However, in itself it was not commercially successful at that time - maybe because of the immature market or an inability to sell the idea as something that could be used to ... run a business?

Cheers,

Martyn R Jones
