Since we are all still searching for a unified theory of knowledge, I don't think you've been self-serving, but you may well be self-obfuscating....
There are so many places one can go to manage knowledge (and none of them of value without a theory) I think a young engineering graduate should engineer and learn about the way organizations learn before trying to become a knowledge manager.
