I am amazed at all the mis-directed enery and effort being directed towards KM. It is my impression that people tend to process raw data and use that processed data to gain knowledge they need of the situation or event. They then apply objective reasoning and sound judgement to the knowledge gained to attain a level of understanding they need before making sound, timely decisions. If you follow the flow of information, people need to "understand" the situation before they make a decision and understand actions and issues that result from decisions previously made. So why is everyone focused on managing "knowledge". Instead, there needs to be a focus on information provided in a form that promotes knowledge required to attain the level of "understanding" people need before they make decisions. Recognizing information needed to attain understanding that is linked to key decisions would allow people to increase efficiency in any organization...especially if that organization was using a strategic vision supported by goals and objectives that were commonly understood...and the implementation plan was focused on decisions and actions that would successfully accomplish those goals and objectives in a realistic, timely progressive manner.
It is my opinion that a key to success is a CKO that is focused on supporting the strategic vision of the corporation through the CEO. To be effective, the CKO would need to be functionally smart, yet technically proficient. The CKO would need a clear understanding of the CEO's personality and intent. The CKO would work closely w/ the department heads and the CIO to ensure the actions required by the implementation plan utilized people, facilities, organization, training, procedures, equipment and network infrastructure in an integrated manner. I could write all night on this topic, but hopefully there is enough information in this response to stimulate some good discussions. Your thoughts??
