Hello,
It really will depend on how the field develops and diversifies.
Knowledge Management in large corporations, especially in IT, is largely made up of people with a wealth of knowledge and experience gained from working in those industries for many years.
In one KM initiative in a US/multinational company, in which we are involved, every KM manager had at least 12 years experience of working in the company.
We have been providing KM/IM consulting to this company for over three years, but for them this is an exception.
However, this is just our experience of the particular niches in which we work - large enterprises and organizations in the areas of Telecoms, Banking and Government - other organizations might just as well be open to different skill sets and backgrounds.
One type of organization that springs to mind would be the Professional Services/Consulting type of business e.g. Andersen Consulting, KPMG, Ernst & Young, PWC, Deloittes etc.
Another type of organization would be one that is in such a constant change of flux and change that they do not have too much corporate memory to worry about or even manage. But sure, we hope there will be a great and growing demand for KM "experts" which should be reflected in the number of "education" and "certification" services being offered by entrepreunerial types - However beware, there are some offerings in the area of certification and education that are decidedly curious if not dubious.
There is a wealth of information on various aspects of KM available from various sources and in various forms - @Brint is probably the best source and channel for relaible web based information on KM and IM - there is a lot of information and a lot of great pointers at @Brint which I find extremely useful, I am sure that you will also find a lot of interesting and useful things here too.
Regards,
Martyn R Jones
