Don,
With all due respect, I know for sure that during my academic years(1960-1964) there was no prohibition against looking for theories and knowledge that might help provide a more unified basis for human knowledge. From my perspective, that's the whole point of physics, of science, of scholarly research. Trouble is, there are a lot of petty minds, carried by people who crave certainty, and who are badly threatened by more profound and/or creative minds. Since, at the minimum many of the people I worked with in the 60's are still in academia, I think it safe to assume that the support of unencumbered still exists.
No one ever told me what my research agenda should be.
Thanks,
Reilly
