Hi Mike, you haven't read Goethe. He rightly claims that the sun's rays do not 'heat' the earth directly. Otherwise, space wouldn't be a frozen vacuum now would it? Rather, the rays interact with our atmosphere to produce this effect. So looks like your scientific bias is showing. My friend, you have to read widely to unify knowledge. Read and study, and then allow your imagination to do the rest.
