sometimes it is the other way around; MCI was much bugger than Worldcom.
Also don't overlook the explosion in small firms (Silicon Valley, MIT spin offs, small service companies). If you only look at the already big companies, than you may be inclined to conclude what you already concluded; they think big is beautiful. However, perhaps this trend is a result of the pressure felt from innovative companies. If a competitor is too innovative to compete with, buy it (see IBM-Lotus/Notes, Micorosft-Hotmail, AOL-ICQ).
And don't forget "The Bill Religious Cult" a.k.a Microsoft. Fighting a common enemy releases knowledge flows quite easily.
