Greetings Steve,

In the ideal world I like to follow these steps:

1) Start a conversation within the company at different levels to surface staff, customer and supplier assumptions, opinions and gaps in their perception of knowledge. Understanding just what 'knowledge' means within a company, helps to focus the KM project on areas and activities that deliver fast returns, gives an early feel for the amount of training or awareness needed, helps to determine the cultural issues that may block successful implementation and gets the staff involved and interested.

2) Host a few 'design events' where the staff can explore new ideas, collaborate to envision the future, work backwards to KM needs from a combined vision.

3) Conduct a high level knowledge audit to identify boundary objects, information sources, flows, stores and sinks, learning opportunities and knowledge strategies. Dialog with interested parties on knowledge for innivation, for corporate intelligence, for strategic advantage, discuss likely cultural blocks and search for an executive champion.

4) Start looking and evaluating possible KM practices & products, paying particular attention to their integration with existing architectures and their impact on current established processes. Place the emphasis on practice rather than implementation of a technology. KM is ALL about people and learning.

5) Prototype by selecting a small, 'safe', project with high potential impact and fast returns.

Hope this is what you were looking for? Please feel free to ask for more details if required.
