In searching for an "ideal" Knowledge Manager a lot depends on the level of structured knowledge management that exists within an organization. If the development of a KM process is just beginning, then someone with a varied background within a particular industry, coupled with mgmt. experience outside that industry may be necessary.

If however, a KM operation already exists and the structure is in place, it may only require someone who has had experience in different functions within an industry.

In the pharmaceutical industry, we have found that someone with both sales and marketing experience will understand the need to share the important type of knowledge. Also, front line customer experience is important if the goal of the KM program is to share strategies that will be of value to the company's clients.
