The discussion below seemed to be getting a little ugly. I think there are some valuable ideas in there that have stopped being addressed.
I think P. Richard Hansen's original contention was that the field of Knowledge Management is really dealing with information, not knowledge.
I believe this idea has some merit.
Documented "knowledge" in a book or on a computer is only information. If I never access this information it provides no benefit.
If I read this information and use it, it becomes knowledge. So by my definition, knowledge is information internalised and utilized.
A second point that I think was made is that a lot of knowledge is difficult to quantify and objectify. Perhaps what is more important than documentation is communication. Having people interact and share experiences will likely convey a closer approximation of the original knowledge than a documented procedure or best practice.
Perhaps KM focuses too much on the technology side and not people.
