hi Don,

Knowledge:
Yep makes sense. Knowledge is information viewed in a transient perspective, however maybe not always personal. Shared knowledge, which is the application of the same principles except it involves more than one person, implies synergistic knowledge value. one plus one = three. Therein lies the "theoretical" value of knowledge MANAGEMENT.

***
Knowledge Managers:
The actual tasks undertaken by the knowledge manager(s) probably varies, depending on the challenges faced in establishing this knowledge enterprise.

However, the formation of knowledge communities, where a set of of people / information / interactions / (any else I missed out) that belong to a specific context is the responsibility of the orgnisation as a whole. The goal is to establish active communities, populate it with aptly-motivated, skilled persons. The next challenge would then be to reduce the churn rate (membership loss).

The other is to ensure that the community interacts within the context of the enterprise needs. However, various studies has shown that members tend to meander to some extent, but that is viewed as quite a healthy sign.

These communities are normally be lead by knowledge managers / mediators who are responsible for the value created by their communities into the enterprise. This is loosely defined as measuring intellectual capital - which is another also contentious topic. Any thread topic I think (sigh)

cheers,
rob.c.
